2018


2017

  • November, 2017: Collected 196 surveys through outreach and pop-up events at key locations in the district: Hawthorne Transit Station, Franklin Underpass, El Sancho Taco Shop.

  • October 26, 2017: Partnered with Stemach Design + Architecture, ML Vidas, and  to host an Urban Design Challenge at the BND Design Conference.

  • October 12, 2017: BCD Initiative Launch Party at the Barrel Thief Lounge. More than 150 Midtown neighbors, business owners, Maker's District folks, landowners, and engaged citizens showed up to learn more about the vision for the BCD and what they can do to support it. (Read articles on the Launch Party from The Source and OPB.)

  • October 27, 2017: Central Oregon LandWatch and Brooks Resources Corporation awarded the City Club of Central Oregon’s first-ever Conversation of the Year Award for their role in the “Westside Transect” conversation. It is credited, at least in part, for accomplishing three things:  (1) it helped bring finality to Bend’s decade-long Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) dispute; (2) it created a de facto permanent boundary for Bend’s westward expansion toward the forest and Tumalo Creek; and (3) it re-directed the community’s focus toward revitalization of its neglected urban core between the Bend Parkway and Fourth Street.  That area has become known as the Bend Central District (BCD). https://cityclubco.org/city-club-coty-winner/

  • October 9, 2017: Astir Agency developed branding and logo assets for the Bend Central District.

  • September 1, 2017: Central Oregon LandWatch sponsored a mural by Nicole Fontana on The Open Book as part of the High Desert Mural Festival.

  • September 17, 2017: Hosted a parklet at Bend Open Streets.

  • August 17, 2017: The City Club of Central Oregon’s forum "Bend's Central District - What Will the Future of Urban Density Look Like?" had 280 attendees. City Club's website.

  • June 21, 2017: Formed the BCD Initiative’s Technical Advisory Group, a committee of volunteers working to identify challenges and opportunities toward harnessing the Bend Central District’s full potential.

  • Spring, 2017: Recognizing that more than a decade of City planning efforts identifying the potential for the Bend Central District with little follow through, Central Oregon LandWatch formed a project to advocate for the Bend Central District.  


2016

 

2013 - 2014

  • December 6, 2016: The City of Bend’s Urban Growth Boundary with the Bend Central District designated as an Opportunity Area went into effect.

  • September 22, 2016: The City of Bend’s Urban Growth Boundary plan was unanimously approved by the Bend City Council. LandWatch’s strong voice in the planning process helped to create a plan that will add more housing capacity to the city while reducing urban sprawl by 70% compared to the original proposal in 2009. The plan adds capacity for the projected needed housing and jobs by focusing density and redevelopment in several efficiently located “Opportunity Areas,” including as the Bend Central District.

  • April 28, 2016: After recognizing the importance of the Bend Central District for the City of Bend’s future, leaders from Central Oregon LandWatch and Brooks Resources Corporation jointly sponsored a peer-review and analysis of Bend’s Central District MMA Plan and Code Amendments, and suggested changes were subsequently adopted by the Bend City Council.  https://www.centraloregonlandwatch.org/blog/2016/9/30/jointly-sponsored-peer-review-to-enhance-bends-central-district


  • July, 2014: The City of Bend completed a draft Multi-Modal Mixed Use Area Plan for the Bend Central District with recommendations for: Land Use changes, City Plan and Code changes, and Transportation changes.

  • 2013 – 2014: The City of Bend conducted extensive public outreach and research to develop the Multi-Modal Mixed Use Area Plan for the Bend Central District (Project Team, Technical Advisory Committee Meetings, Community Workshops and Events, Articles in local papers, Meeting flyers, Meeting announcements, Translation, special accommodations, and graphics, etc.).

  • 2005 – 2007: The Third Street Corridor was identified as a redevelopment opportunity in the City of Bend’s Central Area Plan process.
